AI Search Glossary
Key terms and definitions for AI search analytics, generative engine optimization, and brand visibility tracking.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
The practice of optimizing a brand's visibility in AI-generated search results, including responses from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. GEO focuses on influencing how AI platforms mention, describe, and recommend brands in response to user queries.
AI Search Visibility
A measure of how often and how prominently a brand appears in AI-generated search responses. Unlike traditional search visibility which tracks ranking positions on search engine results pages, AI search visibility measures presence within the AI-generated text itself.
Visibility Rate
The percentage of relevant AI prompts in which a brand is mentioned. For example, if a brand appears in 40 out of 100 industry-relevant prompts sent to ChatGPT, the visibility rate is 40%. This is the primary metric for measuring AI search presence.
Sentiment Score
A numerical rating of how positively or negatively an AI platform discusses a brand in its responses. Sentiment scores range from highly negative to highly positive and help brands identify reputation risks or opportunities in AI-generated content.
AI Citation
A reference to a specific website, domain, or source that an AI platform includes in its response. Citations indicate which sources the AI trusts and references when generating answers. They directly affect brand visibility.
Position (AI Mention)
Where a brand appears in an AI-generated response relative to other brands mentioned. Position 1 means the brand is mentioned first, which typically carries more weight for user perception and click-through behavior.
Google AI Overview
An AI-generated summary that appears at the top of Google search results, synthesizing information from multiple web sources. AI Overviews answer user queries directly within the search page, reducing the need to click through to individual websites.
Prompt-Level Analysis
The practice of examining AI responses at the individual prompt level rather than in aggregate. Prompt-level analysis reveals which specific queries drive brand mentions and helps identify content gaps and optimization opportunities.
Citation Source Type
The category of a domain cited by an AI platform. Common types include UGC (user-generated content from Reddit, Quora, forums), Editorial (news sites, review platforms), Corporate (company websites), and Other. Understanding source types helps brands prioritize content and link-building efforts.
AI Brand Tracking
The process of systematically monitoring how AI platforms mention, describe, and recommend a brand across various prompts and topics. AI brand tracking provides data on visibility, sentiment, competitive positioning, and citation patterns.
Competitive Benchmarking (AI Search)
The practice of comparing a brand's AI search visibility metrics against competitors. Competitive benchmarking in AI search includes share-of-voice analysis, sentiment comparison, position tracking, and citation source overlap to identify competitive advantages and gaps.
